I Alone Can Fix It: The Apotheosis of Donald J. Trump

2016 RNCIt is not often that one gets to witness the creation of a universe: a Big Bang, exploding in an instant, right before our very eyes, spinning gloriously outward and upward, lifted up on the breath of God.  Yet here we are, perched on the rim of Genesis, blinded by the light that shone in the darkness.

And then I saw a New Heaven and a New Earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.  (The Apocalypse 21:1) For this is indeed a New Heavens and a New Earth, ruled over by a Deity beloved by his children, while feared and loathed by his enemies.

“I alone can fix it,” saith this Lord of Hosts, declaring the old order finished, over-run with foul aliens whose false religions have darkened the once Good and Great World.

I am your voice. I will restore the Law. I will bring back your jobs, and shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid.

It is no longer astonishing when politicians make promises that they cannot keep, or raise the hyperbole to near-messianic levels. One may reflect that a mere 7 and a half years ago, the current occupant of the gleaming White House noted at his inauguration the stories we would later tell about it: “This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth.”

Donald J. Trump, however has taken Presidential apotheosis to an entirely new level. There is an “I” rather than a “we.” There is a twinkling of an eye, rather than a long hard struggle. There is wonder-working power in his words. The priests of Egypt will be astonished when his staff turned serpent, gobbles up their staff’s turned serpents. Though plagues come upon the enemy, in America, as in Goshen, there will only be light and life.

As with all Deities, he seems sometimes capricious and contradictory. Last night, the same GOP delegates who had declared just two days earlier that LGBTQ people could be “cured” by “conversion therapy” were now cheering their self-proclaimed Savior.

When he mentioned the old Devil by name, the crowd chanted “Lock her up! Lock her up! Lock her up!” fists pumping into the air. For they want him to bind her for a thousand years in the abyss so that she should deceive the nation no more. Some among them have been calling for her execution, lest the millennium pass and she rises to deceive again. Trump smiled at his unruly creation, “Let’s just beat her in November.” But he didn’t say what would happen to her after his inauguration. For his ways are not our ways, nor are his thoughts our thoughts.

Perhaps he gave us a hint when he said that, in a Trump Administration, we would no longer accept immigrants from countries that have been compromised by terrorism. “We don’t want them in our country.” As is often the case with Deities, he did not explain what he meant by that, leaving us to reflect on the majesty of his Words.

He alone can save us. “I have a message to every last person threatening the peace on our streets and the safety of our police: When I take the oath of office next year, I will restore law and order to our country.”

He alone.
